Bread for Women: Revitalizing Women-Owned Bakeries
In some of Kabul’s most underserved neighborhoods, the “Bread for Women” project is helping reactivate female-run bakeries, creating pathways for sustainable income while supporting women living in extreme poverty. Beyond livelihoods, the project is improving daily living conditions. Previously, many bakeries operated outdoors or within improvised home spaces, where plastic materials like bags and packaging were often burned for fuel—filling rooms with harmful smoke and creating serious health risks. Through this initiative, bakeries are being rehabilitated or newly established in safer, designated spaces, allowing for cleaner combustion, improved air quality, and more sustainable production practices. This effort is made possible through a collaborative partnership between Nove Caring Humans, Uplift Afghanistan Fund, and OttoPerMille Valdese, working together to support women’s resilience, health, and economic dignity in Afghanistan.
